30th September 2011 Cat: Concrete Tile with 1 Comment

Hi, I’m working on restoring a 28 year old house (raised ranch) with what appears to be vinyl tiles on the concrete that I want to remove. They’re not ceramic tiles so I’m only guessing that they must be vinyl. They’re incredibly difficult to remove so far and I was wondering if there are any tips that a professional or experienced handyman could give me for removing them in the most efficient way? I don’t have it in my budget at the moment to hire a contractor to do this for me so I’m stuck doing it on my own with the help of family, but if there’s a technique that might make this a little easier on us, I would really appreciate finding out what it is. The goal is to rip all the tile up, seal the concrete, and then decide what sort of flooring to install, but I’m nowhere near that point yet. Thanks in advance for your help. :)
Okay, great. But how would I know if they’re asbestos tiles? Should I hire someone to check them or since I was able to remove one tile so far, should I bring it in to be checked by a professional? I honestly can’t say for certain they’re not asbestos tiles, I just know they’re not ceramic.

rent a heat gun and warm them up be careful not to catch anything on fire. use a long handled straight hoe you can get on at the hardware store pretty cheap. but above all make sure they are not asbestos tiles if they are i wouldn’t remove them but cover them up w/ vinyl or carpet

dry ice you can buy it at most large grocery stores get a piece about a foot square and put over the tile and let sit for 2 to 4 min. than take a hammer and hit the tile it is best to cover the tile with a towel before you hit it so the broken pieces do not fly and put out a eye or cut some one the dry ice causes the mastic USED in putting the tile down to become brittle
    GOOD LUCK
