24th February 2012 Cat: Concrete Tile Roof with No Comments »

Basically, where I work there’s single-floored a lobby leading into a 3 story building.Immediately above the lobby is an outdoor balcony/sitting area that one can access from the second floor.

the balcony is ’tiled’ with concrete slabs, and is, from what I see, very flat.
What would the make-up, layer by layer of the roof of the lobby/floor of the balcony be?

I mean, there’s tiles, what’s beneath those? and beneath that? and beneath that?

I basically want to know because this roof/ floor is leaking a little. the problem will be fixed by a professional, but I’m just curious as to how one would construct a totally flat surface to keep out rain, and support the weight above it??

sorry if this question is very vague…
thanks for your answers
clear diagrams would be much appreciated. can’t find any =/

Answer by Woody C
sounds like concrete slab/tile with grout around the edges and tile adhesive underneath. beneath the tiles could be fiber cement boards, then wood boards, then wood frames supported from inside the building. if none of that, then its mostly concrete. the balcony should be either slightly slanted to allow the water run off the edge or the floor is lower than the floor in the building. the plate or weather strips around the door would be keeping the water out.

there is a ratio in building a floor that protrudes beyond the wall. for every feet of weight outside, there should be feet of weight outside plus feet of weight inside to support the outside weight plus people. the ratio would favor the weight on the inside. the wall would have to be sturdy to be the fulcrum and support the weight on both sides.
